PLC / HMI, SCADA, Alarms & Historian
Distinguish acknowledging an alarm from removing its cause
An acknowledged alarm can remain active because the abnormal condition still exists or reset requirements have not been met.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Review the configured alarm state, source condition and platform-specific acknowledgment model through normal operator views.
Interpret the evidence
Acknowledge, confirm, return-to-normal and machine reset can have different meanings. The HMI action must not be assumed to clear a controller fault.
Resolve and verify
Correct the underlying condition and follow the documented recovery sequence, then verify both source health and alarm state.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not treat acknowledgment as proof the machine is safe to restart or automatically reset protective functions.
