Read Oracle session wait state without confusing past and current waits
An event name can remain visible when a session is no longer waiting. Interpret the event together with its state and wait class.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT sid, serial#, status, state, event, wait_class, seconds_in_wait FROM v$session WHERE type = 'USER';
Read the result
STATE distinguishes a current wait from other states. Idle waits often mean the server is waiting for client input rather than experiencing a database bottleneck.
Resolve and verify
Sample the affected session while reproducing the problem, then correlate waits with response time and server work. Investigate the measured limiting stage.
Operational precautions
Do not label every SQL*Net message from client event a network defect or use one snapshot as a workload history.
