ORA-08177: handle serializable transaction conflicts correctly
A serializable transaction can fail when concurrent committed changes conflict with its view of data. This is an application transaction-design issue, not a corrupted block.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT sid, serial#, module, action FROM v$session WHERE sid = TO_NUMBER(SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV','SID'));
Read the result
The query identifies the affected session and application context. Verify its isolation mode separately from driver configuration and the transaction setup statements; a separate DBA session may use another mode.
Resolve and verify
Review concurrent update paths and implement a bounded retry of the entire transaction where business semantics allow it. Keep retries safe and observable.
Operational precautions
Do not retry only the final SQL statement or silently reduce isolation without checking correctness requirements.
