Oracle Database / SQL & PL/SQL Errors
ORA-00001: identify the violated unique key
A duplicate-key error can reflect a retry, incorrect identifier generation or a genuine business duplicate. Identify the constraint before deleting data.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT owner, constraint_name, table_name, constraint_type FROM all_constraints WHERE owner = 'APP_OWNER' AND constraint_name = 'UK_APP_ORDERS';
Read the result
The matching constraint locates the table and key type. A standalone unique index may require checking ALL_INDEXES instead.
Resolve and verify
Inspect the key columns and application retry path. Make create operations idempotent where appropriate, or correct the key generator after determining the intended record.
Operational precautions
Do not delete the existing row simply to make the insert pass. It may be the legitimate completed result of an earlier request.
