TLS 1.3 early data and replay-sensitive infrastructure APIs
An API gateway enables early data to reduce connection latency. A state-changing infrastructure request may be unsafe to process under replay conditions even when the connection is encrypted.
Environment and inputs: Stateful network boundaries, TLS endpoints and IPsec gateways; use the deployed security policy and implementation manual. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Inventory which routes accept early data, whether methods are genuinely idempotent and what anti-replay guarantees the server actually provides. Include retries and duplicated requests in the analysis.
Explain the result
TLS 1.3 early data has replay considerations distinct from ordinary post-handshake application traffic. An HTTP method label alone does not prove the backend operation has no repeated side effects.
Plan the fix
Disable early data for replay-sensitive operations or implement the documented application safeguards. Keep latency optimization scoped to requests whose semantics tolerate the supported replay model.
Check the result and rollback
Replay controlled test requests against a nonproduction service and verify no duplicate state change occurs. Revert the optimization if the application cannot reliably enforce its intended semantics.
