IPsec NAT traversal and a tunnel that fails only behind one edge
A VPN works from a public address but fails behind a translated access network. IKE negotiation may begin while the required encapsulated data path or mapping persistence is broken.
Environment and inputs: Stateful network boundaries, TLS endpoints and IPsec gateways; use the deployed security policy and implementation manual. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Capture NAT detection, negotiated encapsulation, translated tuples, keepalive behavior and firewall decisions. Compare control exchange with actual protected traffic rather than relying on initial authentication success.
Explain the result
NAT changes addressing and state lifetimes outside the VPN endpoints. Supported traversal must preserve the usable encapsulated path and account for mappings that expire during idle periods.
Plan the fix
Permit the specific documented traversal traffic and align state handling with endpoint requirements. Keep the egress mapping stable where the design needs it, without granting unrestricted inbound access.
Check the result and rollback
Test active transfer, idle recovery and access-edge restart. Restore the previous edge policy if the change broadens exposure or another mapping behavior still breaks the protected flow.
