Scrape gaps are missing evidence, not zero utilization
A dashboard displays zero traffic during a monitoring network outage. Operators interpret the graph as an idle service even though the collector simply received no samples.
Environment and inputs: Network and infrastructure observability; Prometheus examples describe metric semantics rather than a universal exporter schema. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Inspect target reachability, scrape success, sample timestamps and dashboard missing-data behavior. Compare the monitoring path with application availability through an independent observation point.
Explain the result
No observation is different from an observation of zero. Filling gaps with zero can conceal collector failures and distort rate calculations or availability reports.
Plan the fix
Represent missing data explicitly and alert on loss of essential telemetry with appropriate ownership. Keep monitoring-path failure separate from target-service failure while correlating both during incidents.
Check the result and rollback
Disconnect a test collector path and verify the dashboard shows uncertainty and the right alert. Revert if gap handling manufactures outages or hides real measured zero values.
