Kubernetes / Deployments, Scheduling & Batch Workloads
Explain a Deployment whose template changes do not start a rollout
A Deployment can be intentionally paused while edits accumulate. Inspect its state before diagnosing a controller outage.
Environment and inputs: Kubernetes · kubectl with supported client/server versions and delegated RBAC. Examples use namespace app unless noted. Check context, namespace, APIs and provider support first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
kubectl -n app get deployment web -o jsonpath='{.spec.paused}{" "}{.metadata.generation}{" "}{.status.observedGeneration}'
Read the result
The paused flag and generation values provide reconciliation context. A generation difference can also be transient or indicate another controller issue.
Resolve and verify
Compare pause state with the approved release procedure and Deployment conditions. Resume only through the responsible owner's reviewed workflow and monitor the intended revision.
Before changing production
Do not clear a deliberate pause while a maintenance or change hold is active.
