Include etcd and encryption dependencies in a self-managed cluster recovery plan
Restoring application volumes alone does not restore Kubernetes API state. Identify control-plane ownership and supported snapshot recovery responsibilities.
Environment and inputs: Kubernetes · kubectl with supported client/server versions and delegated RBAC. Examples use namespace app unless noted. Check context, namespace, APIs and provider support first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
kubectl -n kube-system get pods -l component=etcd -o wide
Read the result
This common self-managed layout may expose static etcd Pods. Managed or external etcd deployments can look different and the listing is not a backup validation.
Resolve and verify
Have the control-plane owner verify supported snapshots, encryption configuration and credentials through secure procedures. Rehearse an isolated cluster-state recovery alongside application data recovery.
Before changing production
Do not run an improvised etcd restore against a live quorum or assume a snapshot includes external application volumes.
