Kubernetes / Cluster Operations, Access & Incident Response
Check Kubernetes component compatibility before upgrading a client or node
An unsupported version combination can complicate API behavior and upgrades. Capture versions rather than assuming every recent binary is compatible.
Environment and inputs: Kubernetes · kubectl with supported client/server versions and delegated RBAC. Examples use namespace app unless noted. Check context, namespace, APIs and provider support first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
kubectl version
kubectl get nodes -o wide
Read the result
The client/server report and node listing provide version context when access works. Managed add-ons and runtime versions need separate inventory.
Resolve and verify
Compare the actual components with the version-skew policy and distribution's supported upgrade sequence. Plan staged changes and validate APIs and workloads afterward.
Before changing production
Do not upgrade every component independently or use a client far outside supported skew merely because basic get commands work.
