Find a missing or conflicting Docker network alias
A service name can resolve unexpectedly when aliases differ across attached networks or several endpoints share the same alias.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{json .NetworkSettings.Networks}}' app
Read the result
The endpoint metadata shows aliases and network membership for this container. Shared aliases may resolve to several addresses and do not guarantee a stable single target.
Resolve and verify
Compare the intended peer name with all relevant network endpoints and deployment ownership. Correct alias drift and verify name resolution and application readiness.
Before changing production
Do not hard-code transient container IPs or assign one business alias to unrelated workloads.
