Docker / Volumes, Filesystems & Recovery
Explain why files from an image disappear under a Docker mount
A mount at a container path can obscure files already present at that location in the image. The content may still exist in the image layer.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{json .Mounts}}' app
Read the result
The destination paths reveal where mounts replace the visible filesystem view. Volume initialization and bind-mount behavior are not identical.
Resolve and verify
Compare the intended application and configuration paths with the image layout. Correct the reviewed mount design and validate initialization without overwriting existing data.
Before changing production
Do not remove the mount to expose image defaults until the data owner's persistence and migration requirements are understood.
