Docker / Volumes, Filesystems & Recovery
Identify where a Docker application's data is actually stored
A path inside a container can be a bind mount, named volume, tmpfs or writable layer. Inventory mounts before recovery or replacement.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{json .Mounts}}' app
Read the result
The mount list shows source, destination, type and access metadata for this container. Files outside these mounts can remain in the ephemeral writable layer.
Resolve and verify
Map every durable application path to its approved storage and backup process. Correct missing persistence through a tested migration rather than a blind restart.
Before changing production
Do not remove the container or its volumes before checking for unrecovered business data.
