Docker / Compose, Swarm & Production Security
Choose Compose secret delivery without assuming every backend behaves like Swarm
Compose can mount secret material through supported platform mechanisms, but source, ownership and lifecycle behavior depend on the implementation.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker compose config --quiet
Read the result
The model check can catch configuration errors without printing the resolved model. It does not certify source-file protection or guarantee encrypted external secret storage.
Resolve and verify
Review secret references and file access through the approved secret-management workflow, then test application access without logging values. Rotate exposed credentials and validate all consumers.
Before changing production
Do not commit secret files, place passwords in command arguments or assume Compose secrets and Swarm secrets have identical storage semantics.
