Docker / Images, Dockerfiles & Build Reliability
Use artifact provenance to explain which build produced an image
An image tag and a passing application test do not record all source, builder and dependency inputs. Inspect the published artifact identity first.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker buildx imagetools inspect registry.example.com/team/app:release
Read the result
The manifest inspection identifies the remote artifact and descriptors. Provenance or SBOM availability depends on how the image was built, exported and retained.
Resolve and verify
Compare approved attestations and source revision with the deployed digest using the release system's supported tooling. Preserve traceability through a controlled rebuild.
Before changing production
Do not claim an image is trusted solely because an attestation object exists; verify its origin and policy requirements.
