Windows Commands / IT Support Guides
Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Repeated system component errors may justify integrity repair after basic application and disk checks. Capture the original error and ensure important work is saved first.
Environment and inputs: Windows 11 · Command Prompt unless PowerShell is specified
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
How to read the result
Run these in an elevated terminal, in order. DISM attempts component-store repair; SFC then verifies protected system files and attempts repair using available components.
What to do next
Read each final status rather than assuming completion means success. If a source or repair error appears, preserve the error code and relevant DISM or CBS log excerpt for the next investigation.
Before you make a change
These commands change system files and can take time. Use a stable power source and approved repair sources; do not repeatedly run them to mask storage failures.
