Windows Commands / IT Support Guides

Inspect a Windows service with sc.exe

A service that fails on startup needs a state check before a restart. The internal service name can differ from the label shown in Services.

Environment and inputs: Windows 11 · Command Prompt unless PowerShell is specified

Try the diagnostic command

Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.

sc.exe query Spooler
sc.exe qc Spooler

How to read the result

The query displays state information; qc displays configuration, including the executable path and start type. Spooler is the print-service example, not a universal service name.

What to do next

Look up the affected service's real name and compare its state with recent Service Control Manager events. Review dependencies and application errors before requesting a restart.

Before you make a change

Use sc.exe explicitly in PowerShell because sc can resolve to another command in some environments. Do not change service accounts or startup settings without a recovery plan.
