Windows Commands / IT Support Guides
Check filesystem status without immediately scheduling repairs
A file access error may come from filesystem damage, a failing disk or application permissions. Start with an inspection before arranging a repair window.
Environment and inputs: Windows 11 · Command Prompt unless PowerShell is specified
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
chkdsk C:
How to read the result
Without repair switches, CHKDSK reports filesystem status rather than fixing errors. A busy volume can limit what this online inspection establishes.
What to do next
Record the result and check backups and disk health. If repair is needed, plan the appropriate offline or online repair with the device owner and document any required reboot.
Before you make a change
Do not add /f or /r casually: repair can require downtime and a surface scan can take a long time. Prioritize data protection when hardware failure is suspected.
