Investigate unexpected wake-ups on a Windows laptop
A laptop that wakes in a bag or overnight may have an armed device, timer or application request. Gather the available wake information before disabling features.
Environment and inputs: Everyday IT support · Windows PowerShell examples unless specified
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
powercfg /lastwake
powercfg /waketimers
powercfg /requests
How to read the result
In Windows Command Prompt, these queries report the last recorded wake, active wake timers and power requests where available. Some details require an elevated session.
What to do next
Compare the event time with the user's report and inspect the named device or application. Change only the approved setting related to the reproduced symptom, then retest sleep behavior.
Before you make a change
Not every wake source is reported clearly. Avoid disabling all wake devices or power protections, particularly on managed or remotely serviced machines.
