Windows Commands / IT Support Guides

Test a specific TCP service with Test-NetConnection

A server that responds to ping may still reject the application port. A targeted TCP test helps separate service reachability from application authentication.

Environment and inputs: Windows 11 · Command Prompt unless PowerShell is specified

Try the diagnostic command

Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.

Test-NetConnection example.com -Port 443 -InformationLevel Detailed

How to read the result

TcpTestSucceeded reports whether a TCP connection could be established. RemoteAddress shows the address selected by name resolution; the result does not validate TLS or an HTTP response.

What to do next

Replace the hostname and port with the approved application endpoint. Compare the result from an affected client and a working client, then test the application protocol itself.

Before you make a change

Use Windows PowerShell with the NetTCPIP module. Avoid probing unrelated hosts or assuming a successful TCP handshake proves the user can sign in.
