Distinguish a refused TCP connection from a timeout
Two applications can report cannot connect while failing at different stages. A bounded connection attempt provides a clearer error for the network or service owner.
Environment and inputs: Mixed platforms · each example identifies its shell or required tool
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
curl --verbose --connect-timeout 5 --max-time 10 https://example.com
How to read the result
In a shell with curl, verbose output shows resolution and connection progress. Immediate refusal often means a rejecting endpoint or no listener; a timeout can reflect filtering, path failure or an unresponsive host.
What to do next
Compare the destination address and port with the expected service. Correlate the client error with listener state and firewall logs before assigning a root cause.
Before you make a change
Verbose HTTP traces can reveal request headers. Use an unauthenticated harmless endpoint and redact sensitive details before sharing.
