Use a bounded IPv4 MTU test to investigate large-packet failures
Small requests may work while larger transfers stall across a tunnel. A controlled packet-size test can provide evidence of a path MTU problem.
Environment and inputs: Mixed platforms · each example identifies its shell or required tool
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
ping -4 -f -l 1472 example.com
How to read the result
In Windows Command Prompt, -f sets the IPv4 do-not-fragment flag and -l sets ICMP payload size. A 1472-byte payload plus standard IPv4 and ICMP headers totals 1500 bytes.
What to do next
Use an approved responsive destination and compare smaller payloads with larger ones. Correlate fragmentation feedback with the tunnel configuration before requesting an MTU adjustment.
Before you make a change
Timeouts can simply reflect blocked ICMP. This test alone cannot determine the correct interface MTU, and it does not apply unchanged to IPv6.
