Inspect Linux resolver configuration with resolvectl
A Linux workstation may use per-link DNS servers supplied by a VPN or NetworkManager. Reading only resolv.conf can miss the active resolver routing.
Environment and inputs: Mixed platforms · each example identifies its shell or required tool
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
resolvectl status
resolvectl query example.com
How to read the result
On hosts using systemd-resolved, status reports resolver configuration and query performs a lookup through that service. Per-link domains can influence which server handles a name.
What to do next
Compare the query path with the intended VPN or local resolver and test the actual internal name. Check the managing network service before proposing a persistent configuration change.
Before you make a change
This applies only where systemd-resolved is present and used. Do not overwrite a generated resolv.conf file as a generic repair.
