Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Check Linux time and synchronization status
Incorrect time can break certificates, authentication and log correlation. Inspect clock configuration before manually setting a new time.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
timedatectl status
How to read the result
The output distinguishes local time, UTC, timezone and reported synchronization state. Availability and meaning of synchronization details depend on the host's time service.
What to do next
Compare UTC time with an approved reference and inspect the configured time daemon when drift persists. Include timezone information when correlating an incident across machines.
Before you make a change
This example assumes systemd. Manual clock jumps can disrupt databases and authentication; use the approved synchronization service instead of ad hoc changes.
