Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Find the RPM package behind a Linux executable
On an RPM-based host, package ownership helps connect an executable to the correct update and support channel. Check metadata before overwriting a system binary.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
rpm -qf /usr/bin/bash
How to read the result
The query reports which installed package owns the given path. It does not automatically establish that the installed file still matches the package payload.
What to do next
Substitute the failing executable's real path, then collect the package version and compare it with a working host in the same managed release group.
Before you make a change
Use this on RPM-based distributions. Local or containerized installations can live outside the host package database and need separate investigation.
