Linux Commands / IT Support Guides
Find Linux resource consumers with ps
A server slowdown needs a process-level baseline. A sorted snapshot can identify candidates for a closer investigation without immediately interrupting work.
Environment and inputs: Linux · Bash-compatible shell; package and service names vary by distribution
Try the diagnostic command
Use the stated shell and platform. Replace sample domains, addresses, services and paths with values from the system you are authorized to support.
ps -eo pid,ppid,user,comm,%cpu,%mem --sort=-%cpu | head -n 15
How to read the result
The output includes process and parent IDs, account, command name and resource estimates. ps CPU values are not the same as a continuous live utilization graph.
What to do next
Compare several samples with a live monitor and application request rates. Inspect the parent process and service before deciding whether the workload is expected.
Before you make a change
Process lists can contain sensitive arguments if you choose wider command fields. Do not kill a process based solely on one high number.
