Inspect cached Windows DNS answers before clearing them
A DNS server may keep an older recursive answer while authoritative data has changed. Preserve the cached evidence first.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Show-DnsServerCache -ComputerName DNS01
Read the result
With DNS Server administration tools, the command displays cached records available on the selected server. Client and application caches remain separate.
Resolve and verify
Compare the cached answer and TTL with the intended authoritative value. Use targeted managed cache handling only when justified and confirm subsequent recursive answers.
Before changing production
Do not clear an entire production cache repeatedly; it removes evidence and can increase upstream query load.
