Linux Server / Boot, systemd & Service Recovery
Prepare a recovery path before changing Linux boot configuration
A remote server can become unreachable after a bootloader, network or filesystem change. Validate console and recovery access before maintenance.
Environment and inputs: Linux server baseline · Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / RHEL 9-style systems. Use the specified distribution, init system and installed tool; service names, privileges and supported options can differ.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
findmnt /
cat /etc/os-release
Read the result
These read-only commands identify the root mount and distribution context for the runbook. They do not test the out-of-band console or prove recovery media will boot.
Resolve and verify
Record storage and distro details, verify authorized console access and plan rollback with the platform owner. Make one reviewed change and validate a controlled boot.
Before changing production
Do not test emergency kernel parameters or bootloader edits on the only production node without a recovery path.
