Windows Server / Hyper-V & Failover Clustering
Collect a bounded cluster event window before logs rotate
A brief resource failure can be difficult to diagnose after successful failover. Preserve events around the exact incident time.
Environment and inputs: Windows Server 2022 / 2025 baseline · Windows PowerShell with the specified role or RSAT modules; native utilities are identified in the text. Use delegated administration and elevation only where required.
Start with this check
Confirm the host, shell and access role. Replace sample names, paths, domains and interfaces with approved targets. These are diagnostic commands; assess policy and workload impact before making changes.
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering/Operational'; StartTime=(Get-Date).AddHours(-2)} -MaxEvents 100
Read the result
With access to the enabled channel, the query returns recent operational records. Disabled channels or retention limits can leave gaps.
Resolve and verify
Correlate events across affected nodes with resource, storage and application logs. Identify the first meaningful failure and validate its corrective action.
Before changing production
Do not infer the cause from the final generic failover event or copy sensitive cluster details outside approved records.
