PLC / PLC Fundamentals & Fault Diagnosis
Build a timeline for intermittent PLC restarts
An occasional restart may correlate with maintenance, supply events, task overload or storage problems. A single healthy snapshot cannot explain it.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Collect retained boot counters, reset reasons, event times and the machine operation active at each occurrence where the controller supports them.
Interpret the evidence
Counters can reset on replacement or particular reset types, and unsynchronized clocks can misalign evidence from different devices.
Resolve and verify
Compare repeated incidents by pattern, then test the most strongly supported cause through the appropriate electrical or controls owner. Verify stability over a representative period.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not schedule periodic power cycling as a substitute for diagnosing unexplained controller resets.
