Prepare your workspace and inputs
Obtain the machine asset ID, offline project copy, approved CPU address and permission for read-only diagnostics. Record the engineering-tool version. Keep live I/O forcing, downloads, mode changes and firmware updates outside this inventory task.
Platform context: Siemens S7-1200 with the owner-approved STEP 7/TIA Portal project and supported engineering access. The optional web method applies only when its CPU web server is already enabled and permitted.
Scenario to reproduce or investigate
Two controllers have similar housings but different order numbers or firmware. A generic family label cannot establish that an error code, replacement or project version is compatible.
- Actual target and platform release
- Exact inputs or substituted values
- Baseline result
- Per-step expected and observed output
- Failure encountered and corrective action
- Final acceptance and recovery state
-
Record the offline identity without changing the CPU
Open the project copy and locate the configured CPU in the device tree. Record the configured family, article or order number, firmware selection, module list and project version. Label this as offline configuration, not observed hardware. Compare with the machine inventory and approved drawings.
Command, configuration or input
Machine asset ID: Project revision: TIA Portal version: Configured CPU article number: Configured firmware: Configured modules:Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็นThe offline record distinguishes configuration claims from values observed on the running controller.
If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่านIf there is no approved project or the project cannot open in the installed tool version, record the gap; do not migrate or download a guessed project merely to obtain an identity.
-
Read identification through the approved diagnostic view
Using the confirmed device connection, open Online & diagnostics and record the identification fields exposed by that CPU and tool version. If an already configured web server is the approved method, use its diagnostic identification view and compare the displayed serial, article and version values. Do not enable a web server or alter access settings as part of identification.
Command, configuration or input
Observed CPU article number: Observed serial number: Observed hardware version: Observed firmware version: Observation time and interface: Evidence reference:Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็นThe observed identity contains enough exact values to select the matching manual and distinguish this physical controller from another asset.
If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่านIf access is denied or the diagnostic target differs from the approved address, stop and verify the connection and role. A reachable address alone does not prove this is the intended machine controller.
-
Resolve identity mismatches before interpreting the fault
Compare configured and observed article number, firmware and modules. For a mismatch, attach both records to the machine owner and select the manufacturer manual for the observed hardware while the project discrepancy is resolved. Save the relevant first diagnostic event with its timestamp and manual revision; do not reset it to make the identity comparison look clean.
Command, configuration or input
Field | offline value | observed value | match / mismatch | evidence Article number | ... | ... | ... | ... Firmware | ... | ... | ... | ... Module list | ... | ... | ... | ...Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็นThe support record states which manual applies and whether the project represents the observed controller, including unresolved mismatches.
If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่านIf identity fields are unavailable in the chosen view, use the manufacturer-supported identification method for that release or ask the owner for access; do not infer a part from enclosure appearance.
Check the result before marking this passed
The actual controller article number, serial and firmware are evidenced, compared with the offline project and linked to the correct manufacturer documentation. No live-machine state has been changed.
Record the observed result and evidence location in the downloaded worksheet. Mark unresolved or untested conditions explicitly.
Recovery and cleanup
No controller rollback is needed for read-only identification. Close the diagnostic session and retain the approved project copy. If an unintended online change occurred, use the machine owner’s recovery procedure rather than guessing at a reversal.
Apply to actual work and known limits
This procedure is specific to the stated Siemens family and available diagnostic views. It has not been exercised on physical PLC hardware here and must not be used as a generic live-machine repair instruction.
Background, explanations and original notes
Problem
Similar-looking controllers can use different fault codes, memory behavior and I/O capabilities. Start with verified equipment identity.
Observe and record
Record the controller family, order code, firmware, engineering software version and installed module inventory from approved records or accessible diagnostic views.
Interpret the evidence
A product family name alone does not establish compatibility. Firmware and module revisions can change available diagnostics and supported replacement procedures.
Resolve and verify
Use the matching manufacturer manual and the machine's approved project to interpret the reported fault. Confirm the asset and document revision in the support record.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not download a guessed project or select a replacement solely because its enclosure and connectors look similar.
