PLC / Maintenance, Reliability & OT Security
Preserve event time quality during PLC incident analysis
Fault records from PLCs, drives and HMIs can disagree because of clock drift, reboot defaults or different timestamp sources.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Record current approved time references, timezone context and any known synchronization or timestamp-origin limitations for each evidence source.
Interpret the evidence
Fine timestamp resolution does not guarantee synchronized clocks. Buffered delivery order is not necessarily physical event order.
Resolve and verify
Align the incident with trusted recorded references and repair the supported synchronization design through the responsible owners.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not step controller time during an active process or rewrite event history simply to make a preferred causal story fit.
