PLC / PLC Fundamentals & Fault Diagnosis
Separate a lost engineering connection from a stopped PLC program
A programming workstation can disconnect while the PLC continues operating normally. The engineering link is not the application execution state.
Environment and inputs: Industrial PLC / automation guidance · Verify the exact controller, module, firmware, engineering tool and machine documentation. Linked vendor examples apply to their stated products and library versions; observation, state changes and physical work require distinct authorization.
Observe and record
Compare accessible local indicators, HMI data quality and approved controller diagnostics from an independent authorized path.
Interpret the evidence
Stale workstation values do not prove logic stopped. Conversely, a reachable Ethernet port does not prove application readiness.
Resolve and verify
Identify whether the failure is workstation routing, authentication, protocol access or controller health, then repair that specific layer and confirm fresh diagnostics.
Machine and data safeguards
Do not reboot the controller or change machine mode solely because an engineering session dropped.
