ORA-17503: investigate a file open failure in ASM or Oracle storage
An Oracle file open failure usually carries another error that explains the cause. Capture the complete stack and exact file name.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT file#, name, status FROM v$datafile ORDER BY file#;
Read the result
The database's expected file names help identify the relevant disk group or managed storage path. Access must also be checked in the proper storage instance.
Resolve and verify
Verify disk-group availability, file identity and privileges with the ASM or storage owner. Recover missing content only from a validated source.
Operational precautions
Do not replace ASM paths with arbitrary OS files or copy database files while they are in use without a supported procedure.
