Oracle Database / SQL Performance & Memory
Measure Oracle parse activity as interval deltas
A parse storm can increase CPU and shared-pool pressure. Capture related counters twice rather than diagnosing from one lifetime total.
Environment and inputs: Oracle Database 19c baseline · SQL*Plus-compatible SQL unless RMAN, DGMGRL, ADRCI or a host shell is specified. Check release, patch level, edition and container first.
Start with this diagnostic
Use the stated SQL, RMAN, DGMGRL or host shell and replace sample names with approved targets. DBA and V$ views need authorized catalog access in the correct container. Do not grant broad privileges for an example.
SELECT name, value FROM v$sysstat WHERE name IN ('parse count (total)','parse count (hard)','execute count');
Read the result
These are instance counters. Differences between timed samples reveal recent activity; ratios alone do not identify the responsible application.
Resolve and verify
Correlate growth with cached SQL, connection churn and application releases. Prefer proper bind use and cursor reuse where the SQL semantics allow it.
Operational precautions
Do not hide parse pressure with arbitrary memory increases or force cursor sharing without testing its application impact.
