SYN backlog pressure versus an exhausted application accept queue
A server intermittently refuses or delays new connections while existing sessions work. The incomplete handshake queue and the application accept queue can fail for different reasons.
Environment and inputs: Dual-stack routed networks and transport endpoints; validate the complete path and the active operating-system version. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Collect SYN/ACK retransmissions, listen overflow counters, accept rates, application thread health and connection-state distribution. Correlate the counters with actual new-connection latency.
Explain the result
Handshake pressure is not identical to an application that fails to accept completed connections. Increasing one backlog cannot repair a blocked event loop or an exhausted downstream connection pool.
Plan the fix
Identify the queue that is constrained and correct its consumer or supported capacity setting. Review overload handling and admission control before allowing an unbounded increase in pending work.
Check the result and rollback
Load-test legitimate connection bursts and slow application behavior separately. Restore prior limits if memory use or tail latency grows without a corresponding improvement in completed transactions.
