Backup traffic that consumes storage recovery headroom

A routine backup overlaps with a device failure and makes the remaining cluster unable to meet latency goals. Normal-day capacity planning omitted the combined failure workload.

Environment and inputs: Ceph and storage transport dependencies; match health identifiers and recovery behavior to the installed release. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.

Collect the evidence

Record backup throughput, client demand, recovery traffic, network queues and device utilization. Identify which resources the backup shares with production and protection restoration.

Explain the result

Spare capacity must cover more than the expected daily average. Backup, recovery and failover can coincide, and their combined demand may exceed the surviving system's capacity.

Plan the fix

Schedule or rate-control backup according to a reviewed degraded-mode policy and maintain sufficient reserve. Keep the business recovery-point requirement visible when adjusting backup windows.

Check the result and rollback

Exercise a bounded backup during an approved degraded-capacity test and measure both completion and service latency. Revert if throttling violates backup objectives without creating meaningful recovery headroom.
