Certificate-expiry monitoring across every TLS termination point

A service outage occurs despite a healthy certificate dashboard because monitoring checks only one load-balancer node or the public edge. An internal TLS hop still serves an expired certificate.

Environment and inputs: Stateful network boundaries, TLS endpoints and IPsec gateways; use the deployed security policy and implementation manual. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.

Collect the evidence

Map all termination points, service names, internal hops and trust stores. Probe the actual SNI identity on every required endpoint and distinguish served certificates from inventory entries.

Explain the result

A certificate stored in a management system is not necessarily the certificate currently presented by each listener. Layered TLS creates several independent validity and chain dependencies.

Plan the fix

Automate discovery and deployment verification for all approved termination points, with ownership and renewal lead time. Keep internal and external trust requirements explicit instead of monitoring only expiry dates.

Check the result and rollback

Validate identity, chain and expiry from representative clients after rotation. Revert a rollout if one node presents incompatible material, and require node-specific evidence before declaring the service renewed.
