Network & Infrastructure / OSPF & Underlay Convergence
Area-zero discontinuity and inter-area routes that disappear
A remote area keeps its internal routes but loses inter-area reachability after a backbone link failure. Its surviving physical connection may not provide valid logical backbone connectivity.
Environment and inputs: OSPFv2 IPv4 underlays, with OSPFv3 explicitly identified where used; timers and diagnostics vary by platform. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Draw area membership and ABR attachment for the failed topology. Inspect backbone adjacencies, summary advertisements and the route type visible inside the affected area.
Explain the result
OSPF inter-area routing depends on backbone relationships, not simply on any remaining IP path. A nonbackbone detour does not automatically preserve the necessary area-zero structure.
Plan the fix
Restore an appropriate backbone path or implement the explicitly reviewed redesign. Treat virtual links, when supported and appropriate, as a documented topology choice rather than an invisible permanent workaround.
Check the result and rollback
Test the surviving backbone topology under each planned link loss. Revert if summary reachability becomes dependent on an unreviewed transit area or route feedback appears.
