EVPN Type-2 routes present, VXLAN traffic absent
A remote MAC appears in BGP EVPN while unicast packets never reach the destination host. Control-plane learning can succeed even when VTEP-to-VTEP forwarding is broken.
Environment and inputs: BGP EVPN overlays on a routed underlay; supported route types and multihoming behavior depend on the network OS. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Inspect the selected Type-2 route, remote VTEP next hop, bridge FDB entry, tunnel state and underlay route. Compare encapsulated packet counters on source and destination VTEPs.
Explain the result
The EVPN advertisement describes reachability; it does not prove that the tunnel endpoint is reachable or that the route was installed into the correct bridge and forwarding table.
Plan the fix
Repair the first failed underlay, tunnel or installation dependency. Keep route-target changes separate from transport repair so a reachability fix does not accidentally broaden tenant visibility.
Check the result and rollback
Validate host-to-host traffic and encapsulation counters in both directions. Revert if MAC learning crosses tenants or the repair introduces an unintended local bridge fallback.
