SERVFAIL versus NXDOMAIN in outage diagnosis
An application treats every DNS error as a nonexistent service and suppresses retries. A resolver failure or validation problem should not be interpreted as an authoritative statement that the name does not exist.
Environment and inputs: Authoritative and recursive DNS infrastructure; BIND examples are conceptual and require release-matched configuration. Diagnostic/design example; not tested on production equipment.
Collect the evidence
Capture response code, authority information, resolver logs and direct authoritative results. Test the same name through a validating and appropriately controlled diagnostic path without changing production trust policy.
Explain the result
NXDOMAIN expresses name nonexistence in the returned DNS context. SERVFAIL indicates an inability to complete resolution and can have causes such as upstream failure or DNSSEC validation error.
Plan the fix
Correct the demonstrated resolver or authority defect and make application error handling preserve meaningful distinctions. Avoid caching generic failures as permanent service removal.
Check the result and rollback
Verify known-positive, known-negative and deliberately failing test names. Revert application changes if they create uncontrolled retry storms or hide authoritative nonexistence behind endless transient-error retries.
