Data Monitoring / Splunk Ingestion & Search Evidence
Splunk: Event time versus index time
An alert appears late even though indexing is responsive. Compare event _time with _indextime for a bounded sample and inspect the producer clock.
Environment and inputs: Splunk Enterprise / Splunk Cloud Platform; SPL and event-processing behavior must be checked against the deployed release and collection topology.
Failure scenario
An alert appears late even though indexing is responsive. Confirm the cause before choosing a fix.
Evidence to collect
Compare event _time with _indextime for a bounded sample and inspect the producer clock. Record the time, affected scope and a healthy comparison interval.
Worked diagnostic example
Illustrative bounded SPL search; app is a placeholder index. Negative values can indicate clock or parsing errors.
index=app earliest=-1h latest=now
| eval ingest_delay_seconds=_indextime-_time
| stats count perc95(ingest_delay_seconds) AS p95_delay_seconds by host
Fix the confirmed cause
Separate transport delay from timestamp parsing or clock errors before changing alert windows. Write the expected result first. Change one relevant setting at a time.
Check the result and hand over
Repeat the check for event time versus index time using the same scope and a representative interval. Check that the symptom is resolved, expected records are present and downstream results are correct. If coverage, correctness or latency worsens, restore the recorded configuration through the agreed rollback process.
Scope and precautions
Prefer read-only access and limit queries to the relevant period or dataset. This example has not been tested on your systems. Test changes in an approved environment. Keep credentials and sensitive data out of shared evidence.
