Explain CPU-utilization autoscaling when container requests are missing
Resource-utilization targets rely on the request baseline. Missing requests can prevent the intended CPU utilization calculation.
Environment and inputs: Kubernetes · kubectl with supported client/server versions and delegated RBAC. Examples use namespace app unless noted. Check context, namespace, APIs and provider support first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
kubectl -n app get deployment web -o jsonpath='{.spec.template.spec.containers[*].resources}'
Read the result
The output shows each regular container's declared resources. The HPA's metric type and container scope determine which requests are relevant.
Resolve and verify
Compare measured normal demand with appropriate requests and node capacity. Apply a tested resource baseline and verify HPA conditions and scaling response.
Before changing production
Do not invent tiny requests to make utilization percentages large; that also changes scheduling and resource competition.
