Docker / Compose, Swarm & Production Security
Inspect Swarm secret identity without retrieving its material
A service can reference the wrong secret name or miss a rotation update. Check metadata through authorized manager access.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker secret inspect --format '{{.ID}} {{.Spec.Name}}' app_secret
Read the result
The command reports secret identity metadata rather than plaintext contents. Existence does not prove the intended service references it or the application can read its mount.
Resolve and verify
Compare service secret references, target path and approved rotation workflow. Update consumers through a controlled compatible service change and verify access without logging values.
Before changing production
Do not recreate a secret with guessed content or assume changing an external source updates existing Swarm secret objects.
