Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis

Investigate Docker socket permissions without making the daemon public

Permission denied at a local socket is an access-control issue, not a reason to relax it for every user.

Compiled for Sorlavit Kim · Published · Updated · 1 min read

Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.

Start with this check

Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.

ls -l /var/run/docker.sock
id

Read the result

On a Linux host using this socket path, these show filesystem ownership and the current account's groups. Rootless and remote contexts use different endpoints.

Resolve and verify

Compare the account with the approved administration model and actual socket. Request only authorized access or use the supported rootless workflow.

Before changing production

Do not chmod the socket world-writable or add users to the Docker group casually; daemon access is highly privileged.
