Docker / Engine, Containers & Runtime Diagnosis
Investigate process-creation failures inside a Docker container
A container can hit a task limit while the host still has spare CPU and memory. Inspect its configured PID limit and actual process view.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker container inspect --format '{{.HostConfig.PidsLimit}}' app
docker top app
Read the result
The limit and process listing give related context. Threads can count toward cgroup task limits even when the displayed process list seems short.
Resolve and verify
Compare task growth with application worker design and host policy. Fix runaway creation or choose a justified supported limit and validate under normal concurrency.
Before changing production
Do not remove PID safeguards or kill arbitrary child processes without understanding the service lifecycle.
