Docker / Images, Dockerfiles & Build Reliability
Detect risky secret-related Dockerfile patterns before publication
Secrets passed through ARG or ENV can persist in image metadata or build history. Static checks can flag some unsafe patterns.
Environment and inputs: Docker Engine · Compose v2 and Buildx where specified; Linux containers unless noted. Verify daemon context, installed feature support and authorized host or Swarm manager access first.
Start with this check
Confirm the environment and replace sample objects, namespaces, images, paths and hosts with approved targets. Share only relevant, sanitized output. Follow the workload owner’s process for changes.
docker buildx build --check .
Read the result
With a compatible frontend, supported checks may report suspicious secret-bearing ARG or ENV declarations. They cannot identify every secret or guarantee no prior layer contains sensitive content.
Resolve and verify
Use supported build-secret mounts and the approved credential provider, then rotate any actually exposed credential and rebuild cleanly. Validate that no secret material enters the output artifact.
Before changing production
Do not print secret values in build logs or treat deleting a file in a later layer as removal from all earlier layers.
