Detailed practical guide

Prepare your workspace and inputs

Select one finding against a system you own and obtain an approved reproduction scope. Use a test account and disposable record. Start with a claim that can be checked through an expected access decision, such as a cross-account read, rather than accepting an AI-generated severity label.

Platform context: Authorized staging application, its exact release or commit, a sanitized report and the organization’s normal issue tracker. No public scanning or exploit execution is included.

Scenario to reproduce or investigate

An automated report identifies a possible authorization flaw. Creating an urgent ticket for every unverified claim wastes response time, while closing a report because a scanner no longer flags it can hide an untested path.

Evidence to record in your worksheet
  • Actual target and platform release
  • Exact inputs or substituted values
  • Baseline result
  • Per-step expected and observed output
  • Failure encountered and corrective action
  • Final acceptance and recovery state
  1. Write a bounded reproduction record

Record build ID, test identities, allowed resource, forbidden resource, exact request shape and expected policy outcome. For an object-access claim, create record A owned by account A and record B owned by account B. State that A reading A should work and A reading B should be denied before submitting either request.

    Command, configuration or input

    Finding ID:
    Build / commit:
    Authorized test scope:
    Account A / owned record A:
    Account B / owned record B:
    Allowed case: A reads A
    Denied case: A reads B
    Evidence location:
    Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็น

Another authorized tester can reproduce the exact allowed and denied requests without inventing a target or using real customer records.

    If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่าน

If scope or record ownership is unknown, mark the report unverified and obtain that information before testing. Do not use production data to make an ambiguous report look reproducible.

  2. Validate the claim and assign a concrete disposition

Run the normal allowed request first, then the forbidden request through the same endpoint and identity. Record status, returned fields, server-side authorization result and any state change. A generic HTTP 200 alone does not establish data exposure, and an HTTP 403 response alone does not prove no data was already returned elsewhere.

    Command, configuration or input

Case | request identity | resource owner | expected decision | response fields | server decision | observed state
    Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็น

The finding is confirmed, not reproduced or blocked, with supporting evidence and a named owner. Severity reflects actual reachable data or capability, not only scanner wording.

    If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่าน

If the two requests hit different builds, accounts or gateways, repeat under the same controlled conditions. Preserve an unresolved result rather than labeling it fixed.

  3. Retest the correction and a counterexample

After a code or policy fix in staging, repeat both requests using the same fixture. Add a second forbidden record or relevant role variant to check that the fix is not an object-ID special case. Record the corrected build, regression-test identifier and rollout owner. Close only after the forbidden path is denied and the legitimate path still works.

    Command, configuration or input

Before build | after build | allowed-case result | original forbidden case | second forbidden case | regression test | owner
    Expected result · ผลที่ควรเห็น

The correction changes the demonstrated authorization behavior while preserving normal work, and the test is retained for the next release.

    If it fails · เมื่อไม่ผ่าน

If the scanner result changes but the forbidden request still returns the protected record, the finding remains open. If legitimate access breaks, use the recorded deployment rollback and revise the fix.

Check the result before marking this passed

The original claim has reproducible evidence, an owner and a disposition. A confirmed fix passes the original denied request, a second forbidden case and the normal allowed operation on the same corrected build.

Record the observed result and evidence location in the downloaded worksheet. Mark unresolved or untested conditions explicitly.

Recovery and cleanup

Delete only disposable test records after preserving evidence. Restore the prior staging release if the candidate breaks the allowed case; use a separately approved containment boundary if the confirmed flaw still needs mitigation.

Apply to actual work and known limits

Apply the same evidence lifecycle to reports from AI, scanners or humans. Choose a reproduction specific to the vulnerability class and authorized scope; the object-access example is not a general exploit recipe or proof of other security properties.
