AI Cyber Defense: Use a common event schema without losing source meaning

Keep important source fields and document mappings. Represent missing and unavailable values explicitly rather than assigning a benign default.

Environment and inputs: SOC analytics, SIEM pipelines, event normalization, threat enrichment and human-reviewed security automation.

Scenario and goal

Normalization can collapse distinct authentication failures or authorization outcomes into one misleading event type.

Why it matters

For this scenario, more varied activity and faster sequences can increase both alert load and ambiguity. Separate collection quality, behavioral detection and incident conclusions so a fluent enrichment cannot conceal missing evidence. Define the observable condition and the protected boundary before selecting analytics syntax. A useful detection needs reproducible positive and benign examples as well as a known set of visibility limits.

Evidence to collect

Compare raw source codes, normalized fields, parser version and null handling with the vendor event definition.

Validate with an authorized exercise

Feed synthetic success, denial and unknown-code events through staging; verify none are silently converted into the same successful or failed outcome and raw codes remain recoverable.

Synthetic technical example

A deliberately small synthetic mapping. The default is unknown, and the source value is retained; replace this with reviewed mappings for the actual event provider.

outcomes = {'AUTH_OK': 'success', 'AUTH_DENIED': 'denied'}
raw = ['AUTH_OK', 'AUTH_DENIED', 'NEW_PROVIDER_CODE']
events = [{'source_code': value,
           'outcome': outcomes.get(value, 'unknown')} for value in raw]
assert events[-1]['outcome'] == 'unknown'
print(events)

Rollout and checks

Keep the rule, parser, fixture set and deployment revision traceable together. Review missing fields and delayed events explicitly, and sample suppressed traffic after tuning. Match the disruption of any automated response to the evidence and asset role. Preserve a manual review path so an uncertain case can progress without fabricating either a benign or malicious conclusion.

Scope and limits

This guide proposes a defensive test; it is not a tested production design. Check platform support and local requirements. References explain the mechanisms but do not certify the design. Behavior alone does not prove AI involvement.
