AI Cyber Defense: Rebuild trust in automation after credential compromise
Pause or restrict affected automation through approved procedures, rotate dependencies in order and validate the source of resumed jobs. Avoid blindly restoring a previous secret store.
Environment and inputs: Enterprise incident response, identity recovery, isolated restores, evidence handling and authorized tabletop or lab validation.
Scenario and goal
A clean server can be re-exposed by a pipeline or scheduled job still using a compromised identity.
Why it matters
For this scenario, assume the event sequence may progress faster than normal approval discussions. Prepare decision owners, evidence requirements and reversible containment options before an incident. Separate confirmed access, potential scope, business impact and the attribution of tools. A claim that AI was involved should not delay protection of a verified boundary or inflate a conclusion beyond the retained evidence.
Evidence to collect
Map automation accounts, credential stores, deployment runners, artifact provenance and downstream permissions.
Validate with an authorized exercise
Exercise a staging pipeline with test credentials; verify old credentials fail, the approved runner uses the new identity and deployed artifacts match the reviewed revision.
Rollout and checks
Record action states as proposed, approved, attempted and confirmed, keeping the backend receipt when available. Preserve decisive evidence while reducing immediate harm and document unavoidable gaps. Recovery requires trusted administration, corrected entry paths and tested service behavior. Retire temporary access and exceptions before closing the incident, and give every remaining improvement an owner and acceptance check.
Scope and limits
This guide proposes a defensive test; it is not a tested production design. Check platform support and local requirements. References explain the mechanisms but do not certify the design. Behavior alone does not prove AI involvement.
